Kaltura Cloud Migration in April

By CTL Team on March 17, 2023

To better support and improve the sustainability of the Kaltura platform, UBC is moving Kaltura videos hosted at UBC into the Kaltura cloud. Kaltura is a video platform integrated into the Canvas Learning Management System and the Teaching and Learning Media Portal.

Due to the high volume of videos, this migration will happen gradually over the course of a full month. The Learning Technology Hub will begin moving videos on April 1, 2023, and finish by Monday, May 1, 2023.

Please review the Kaltura Cloud Migration page for more information and resources.

Key Changes:

  • We encourage individuals who use the system to download any Kaltura quiz results and analytics before April 30 if they would like to keep them.
  • During this migration period, you can still create new videos, however, please limit editing existing videos where possible to mitigate any risks related to video migration. If you have an urgent need to update or edit your videos, please refer to the LTHub website for details.
  • For Kaltura videos shared outside of Canvas (e.g., videos displayed on a website), you will need to manually update the video links or embed code after May 1. Please refer to the LTHub website for details.

Key Messages:

March 2023

  • Preparation for Migration
  • Please make any edits you may need to videos at this time.

April 2023:

  • Migration to the Cloud
  • Please save any quiz results, comments, and analytics you wish to keep as these will not migrate; quiz grades already in Canvas Gradebook will remain.
  • Please do not edit any videos at this time as they may not migrate.

May 1st, 2023:

  • Welcome to the cloud!
  • You may notice the Kaltura app looks a little different- this is because you are now using the Cloud.
  • This transition should be seamless for your existing Canvas videos.
  • For Kaltura videos shared outside of Canvas (e.g., videos displayed on a website), you will need to manually update the video links or embed code after May 1.
