It is important to thoughtfully consider the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action around curriculum development. Through the increased awareness of Indigenous knowledges and cultures in post-secondary learning spaces, and the rising use of Generative AI, we see an emerging need to explore the connection between the two in a culturally appropriate manner by building safe and collaborative space for dialogue.
Generative AI relies on digital resources to construct information, raising questions about how and where knowledge is shared, which knowledge is made publicly available, and how students access, interpret, and use cultural information. This presents an opportunity to address this technology in a culturally appropriate manner through collaboration, care, and consideration with and for Indigenous communities.
In consultation with the UBC Okanagan Indigenous Advisory Council (IAC) and Community partners, an Indigenous AI Event will be hosted at UBC Okanagan titled Gen AI in the Circle: Honoring Indigenous Voices and Knowledge. Space is limited. Please visit the event registration page for more information.
