Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is the systematic inquiry into student learning, pushing to advance teaching and learning practices in higher education (Hutchings and Shulman, 1999).
The field of SoTL aims to take teaching beyond a well-rehearsed practice into a scholarly activity, one that engages the instructor in careful planning, evaluation and dissemination. SoTL uses a range of methodologies and builds on disciplinary practices and epistemologies.
The SoTL Seed Program Call for Proposals is now open! The SoTL Seed Program provides those interested in exploring the impact of their pedagogical choices with graduate research specialists, collegial collaborations, and limited funding. All UBC faculty and staff are invited to apply. Deadline: May 27, 2024.
Funding
SoTL Linkage Grant
Enables the synthesis, exploration, and high-impact dissemination of interdisciplinary SoTL research. This pilot funding program supports the formation of interdisciplinary teams of SoTL researchers inquiring into fundamental questions in higher education that benefit from investigation in multiple pedagogical and curricular contexts. Call for Proposals now open. Notice of Intent due May 29, 2024.

Explore UBC Okanagan faculty members participating in the SoTL program.
Dr. Bowen Hui’s work focuses on technology-enhanced personalized learning. One of her SoTL projects is called Teamable Analytics, which is a Canvas-integrated software that helps instructors form teams strategically and automatically in larger classes.
Dr. Abdallah Mohamed’s work involves several SoTL projects that aim to research and implement methods and technologies to foster inclusive, active, and diverse education. One example of his work, LearnCoding, allows students to customize the learning material to meet their preferences and accommodate their diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs.
Dr. Zoë Soon is inspired by the changing needs of her students to come up with fun, new and engaging learning tools and ways of teaching challenging concepts. One of her two major SoTL projects involves the testing of a new set of Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathophysiology Open Education Resources
Dr. Sally Stewart’s interest was sparked by her students’ excitement and understanding. Her SoTL projects include student wellbeing and learning: Increasing student access to the HEAL 100 course; training faculty to facilitate student wellbeing in their classroom environments; and developing and evaluating online curriculum modules on weight bias and eating disorders for health profession programs.
Dr. Peyman Yousefi’s SoTL projects focus on developing an Integrated Dynamic Teaching approach which transcends traditional teaching aspects by integrating modern technological tools.
