How we can help

As your Educational Consultants, we draw on evidence-based practices to promote effective and innovative strategies designed to improve teaching and learning in the classroom and online. We create and curate resources to support key university priorities including experiential learning, Indigenous content integration, inclusion, accessibility, and learning outcomes development.

Some of the questions we can help answer:

  • How can I create a rubric for an assignment?
  • How can I best decolonize/Indigenize my course?
  • How can I support my own professional development?

We value getting to know instructors and hearing about their challenges and innovations in the classroom and online. We welcome the opportunity to meet with you for a 1-to-1 consultation, whether it be to brainstorm ways to increase learner engagement, discuss a course syllabus, or provide feedback on your teaching philosophy statement. We are also available for formative observations of teaching.

Let’s chat! Send us a question or book a 1:1 consultation at ctl.ubco@ubc.ca or 250 807 8229.

Instructional Design examines how technologies impact pedagogy and learning outcomes and bridges between pedagogy and technology. We offer expert advice on effective ways to incorporate technologies into your online, hybrid, and multi-access learning modalities. This offering ensures learner-centeredness in your learning environment while enabling you to assess technologies against your pedagogical goals.

Some of the questions we can help answer:

  • What is a good pedagogical use of a particular learning technology tool?
  • When do I use a particular learning technology tool in my course?
  • How does a particular learning technology fit within a learning taxonomy or a principle of Universal Design for Learning or delivery mode?

We appreciate relationship-building with faculty and welcome you to bring us your Instructional Design questions towards creating more effective technology-mediated learning experiences for your students.

Technical support empowers faculty with ‘how-to’ instructions, resources, and tips in using common learning tools. Our skillful technologists will help you troubleshoot issues you may be experiencing with Canvas (to create course shells and edit roles) or OMR (to scan and assess exams).

We can help you with UBC supported tools such as Kaltura (to create and share media content in Canvas), as well as with open-source tools such as H5P Open Hub (to create interactive content within your course) or iPeer (to assess student group work).

We also support some university developed tools such as Curriculum MAP (to map learning outcomes) or ComPAIR (to help students with peer evaluation).

Some of the questions we can help answer:

  • How do I setup an exam with Respondus Lockdown Browser?
  • How can I merge course sections within my Canvas course shell?
  • How do I setup recurring Zoom meetings for my course?

We strive for timely responses and look forward to providing you with personalized support as you become comfortable with using UBC’s most in-demand learning tools.
