CTL GenAI Sandbox

The CTL GenAI Sandbox is a space where instructors can explore and learn about Generative AI in a friendly, hands-on environment. Whether you're just starting out or already experimenting with AI, we’re here to support you.
Location The CTL GenAI Sandbox is located in the CTL office, in ADM 103H. This space must be booked in advance since the room may need to be unlocked.
Booking Book your time in advance by emailing ctl.helpdesk@ubc.ca with your CWL (Campus Wide Login) and requesting a time during our office hours (8:30AM-4:30PM Monday-Friday) and specifying if you would like a Support Analyst to join you to answer your questions. We will soon have a booking system where you can view availabilities and book your time which will be accessed via a link on this page, but please email us for now.

What does the CTL GenAI Sandbox offer?

The goal of this service is to support instructors at every experience/comfort level with AI, so we support all of the following:

Entry Level/Shallow Dive to Answer Questions and Get You Started Using GenAI

  • High-performance computer with seating, whiteboards, and on-call CTL support (Email ctl.helpdesk@ubc.ca to book now!)
  • Learn about available tools, GenAI concepts, and opportunities

Beginner Friendly Experimentation with LLMs and Generative Media

  • Preconfigured to run LLMs locally (e.g., Llama 3.2, Qwen 2.5, Mistral) for course design, grading, research & more—without sharing data externally
  • Access task-specific models (e.g., Qwen2.5:14B, Mistral-NeMo 12B)
  • Equipped with a powerful GPU for generative media, with preconfigured workflows coming soon (e.g. Script to Video)
  • Tell us what you want to do/create, and let us try to figure out the technical side for you and let you know your options

Advanced/Deep Dive

  • If you are already comfortable with GenAI, you are free to book the space without meeting with a member of our team to utilize the powerful hardware to work on your projects or research. We will simply require your CWL to set you up with admin access in the computer and will advise you on some best practices before you get started.
