Introduction to the scholarship of teaching and learning

This series of workshops is designed to introduce learners to the field of scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). Our aim is to explore scholarship of teaching and learning across the disciplines through a facilitated research development process to design a teaching and learning-focused research project – from defining a research question and placing that question in the context of the relevant literatures, to determining appropriate research methodologies and exploring the ethical implications of your research design.

Learning Outcomes

  • Construct clear, focused, and researchable questions that align with scholarly inquiry.
  • Develop the skills to strategically explore and analyze scholarly literature by identifying theoretical frameworks, recognizing methodological approaches, and locating gaps or contradictions in existing studies.
  • Refine research questions based on literature findings, ensuring the inquiry is relevant, well-grounded in established scholarship, and aligned with ethical research practices.
  • Develop the skills to select and justify appropriate research methodologies and methods for investigating research questions.
  • Analyze ethical considerations and apply institutional research ethics guidelines to scholarly projects.
  • Develop the skills to be able to construct a feasible research plan, including a timeline and key milestones, to guide the inquiry process.
