For two second-year nursing courses, Charlene Strumpel, RN, MSN, created weekly interactive scenarios in place of assigned readings to introduce students to course content.   • Charlene Strumpel wanted to make learning fun for her nursing students and at the same time have her students apply knowledge and skills relevant to different nursing scenarios.
  • In response to feedback about the course having too many readings, Charlene decided to convert text-based case studies into online interactive, gamified learning activities.
  • A secondary motivation was to try something new and creative in her teaching practice.

 

  • Utilize the nursing process to plan and prioritize culturally safe and person-centred nursing care.
  • Engage in ethical and appropriate clinical decision-making.
  • Plan care for a client with an actual or potential alteration in Oxygenation, Skin & Wound Integrity, Metabolism and GI Function.

 

Time for Instructors

  • Prep Time: Charlene Strumpel spent the previous summer preparing for the re-design by learning about instructional design, gamification, eLearning and canvas design. She tried out several AI tools, graphic design tools and platforms; dabbled in basic HTML coding; and received support from the CTL instructional designer in the use of H5P. 
  • Initial development time while still learning: up to 100 hours each scenario.
  • After proficiency with the help of AI: approximately 40 hours, from start to finish. AI was used for writing the narrative for the scenario, transforming the narrative into a series of pages/slides, creating the graphics, making the activities that are embedded throughout the scenario, then creating the scenarios in H5P, importing them into Canvas and setting them up for students. 
  • Canvas design to accommodate the scenarios and ensure a positive learner experience:  2-3 hours per week.

Time for Learners

  • Each scenario takes approximately 1-2 hours to complete. Students might spend longer if they click on the embedded links to review the associated reference documents or if they pause to take notes while completing the scenarios.

A new scenario is posted every week for students, except for during midterm quizzes.  Each scenario is composed of 3 or more H5P activities. Most scenarios have 3 parts:  

  Navigation: 

  • At the start of the year, there’s a very short tutorial activity that explains how to complete the activities and pointing out some of the features. 
  • The scenarios are organized in Canvas Modules. Students must complete the tutorial before they can access any of the other modules (scenarios).
  • Within each module, students must progress through the scenario in order. The module also does not allow the students to progress to the next part of the scenario until they have gotten 100% on all of the embedded H5P activities, but they have unlimited attempts.
  • There’s a link to each scenario on the Canvas course home page, and another link to a page with all of the course reference documents.
  • The scenarios are built within H5P. 
  • Lumi (a free program) is used to convert the H5P activities into SCORM packages that can be imported into Canvas as Assignments.  Please note that LUMI is not supported by UBC CTL or CTLT.
  • ChatGPT and Canva are primarily used to create the graphics for all of the slides (there are about 30-50 slides in each scenario). Since Charlene Strumpel was using the tools extensively this year, she paid for a subscription to each – but for smaller projects a free version of both would work fine. 
  • Microsoft Word was used to write the scenarios, and for simple drawing/illustration tasks. 
  • Another change to this course is that there is no textbook. Rather, it is replaced it with a variety of free resources for students that she reviews and approves, such as open textbooks (e.g., OpenStax), internet references (e.g., Nurseslabs.com), and YouTube videos (e.g., RegisteredNurseRN). 
  • Charlene was supported by the CTL for Canvas design and gamification.

 

 

Grading

  • All of the H5P activities in the scenarios are worth “XP Points” (experience points – as they’re commonly known in video games) that contribute up to 15% of a student’s final grade.  
  • The XP Points are basically a ‘completion’ grade. Students can’t progress through the scenarios unless they achieve 100% on the previous activities, so students who complete the scenarios will usually get full marks. Each scenario usually provides around 200 XP. 

Feedback

  • Every activity/question in the scenario provides feedback. That’s one of the main ways that Charlene Strumpel introduces course content. She provides a detailed explanation after each activity on why the right answer’s correct. If relevant, she also offers tips on how to identify the correct answer.  
  • Most H5P activities permit up to 255 characters of feedback, and Charlene tries to maximize all of them. Since the scenarios include around 80-100 activities, that’s 80-100 opportunities to provide a little snippet of course content. 
  • Start small. Create one or more small activities that could be added to an existing course. That will allow you the time to learn how to use the tools, and to get an appreciation for how long each activity takes so that you don’t over-extend yourself. 
  • The individual H5P activities are quick and easy to make. What takes a lot of time is:  
    • Making the graphics (about 1/3 – 1/2 of the total creation time). 
    • Writing a cohesive narrative that touches on each of the course learning outcomes.

Charlene Strumpel learned that H5P offers a wide variety of activities that can be incorporated into Canvas for different purposes from displaying information in an interesting way to offering challenging and interactive activities.
