Faculty Development

My key knowledge areas: Course design; Teaching Development Program; student-centered teaching and learning; cultural safety in education; experiential learning; community-building and engagement; instructional skills development; creative classroom facilitation; assessment and feedback; navigating conflict in spaces of teaching and learning.

My role within the team: My main area of support is Faculty Development, with a particular lens on new and early-career faculty. I provide a well-rounded and collaborative approach to course (re)design, instructional skills development, and integration of cultural safety, experiential learning, and student-centered approaches to teaching and learning.

My background: I am of settler background, my father having immigrated to Canada from Ostallgäu, Bavaria, Germany and my mother a life-long citizen of the Okanagan.

I fondly joke that UBC Okanagan is my “second home”. I completed my Bachelor of Arts and Education degrees here, and shortly after graduation began a one-year internship with the Associate Vice President, Students portfolio. This is where my passion for student-centered approaches in higher education was founded and formed. I taught preparatory University writing courses as part of the Aboriginal Access Studies program. I worked as an Indigenous Student Advisor with Indigenous Programs and Services and supported the Equity & Inclusion Office as an Equity Facilitator. My work in student development prompted me to pursue my Master of Education in Adult, Community, and Higher Education through the University of Calgary.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I transitioned from the realm of higher education to healthcare, where I worked with Interior Health’s (IH) Indigenous Cultural Safety & Humility program as a Knowledge Facilitator. The focus of my work was to engage with IH employees and community partners in the redesign and delivery of cultural safety training and education across the organization. This also included aligning the curriculum to meet accreditation standards for Continuing Professional Education for physicians and surgeons within the health authority.

I returned to UBC in 2021 as part of the Centre for Teaching and Learning team. As an Educational Consultant with the CTL, I love the varied nature of the work that I do and that it allows me to draw on all facets of my experience and passions.

When I’m not working… I’m dreaming of Spain. You might hear me belting Broadway tunes, harmonizing an alto line, or playing away at Beethoven or Granados on the piano. You can find me whizzing down the ski hill in winter and climbing mountain trails in the summer. When in doubt, I cook.
