Ethical Ed Tech and AI

UBC is a leader in ethical education with technology, which focuses on ethical and informed decisions about education technology implementation (Andrews & Hendricks, 2024). As described in a December post in the CTL Newsletter, there is a clear roadmap for learning technology adoption at UBC which includes three phases with comprehensive evaluation.

The path for ethical ed tech adoption is clear for existing or emerging learning technology at UBC but where does AI fit with ethical ed tech? The same principles apply:

  • How does a particular AI tool prioritize a learning outcome?
  • What problem does this AI tool solve for the learner?
  • Does the AI tool solve the problem?
  • How is student privacy, equity, and fairness safe guarded?

Are you interested in experimenting with AI? UBC encourages this within the boundaries of ethical and responsible use. To help with these boundaries, UBC created principles for use. Risks such as data storage and false information are highlighted as well as ways to mitigate these risks. Building on this bedrock of principles, let us explore AI that prioritizes learning outcomes together. Reach out to the CTL to get started.
