What does UBC say about using Generative AI tools in your course?

Instructors can recommend or require students to use the following tools in their course with caution:

  • ChatGPT 5
  • Microsoft Copilot for Organizations

These tools are unique because they do not require students to sign up for an account or enter personal information to use them. Therefore UBC allows instructors to recommend or require their use with caution, meaning students should be instructed on safe use of this tool, because the risk of accidentally entering personal information or intellectual property is high.

Instructors can review the current state of Privacy Impact Assessments (PIA) with regard to teaching and learning use cases for Generative AI Tools at UBC in the PRISM Interim Report on guidelines for Generative AI Tool Use. If Generative AI tools are integrated into classroom instruction or assignments, instructors should inform students about responsible use, as outlined in this guide and other university-issued directives.
