A lightboard has been installed for UBC Okanagan instructor use in SCI 331, the Teaching and Learning Studio. This is made possible through a collaborative effort between CTL and Constellation.
A lightboard strongly resembles a traditional whiteboard, except in place of a white opaque surface, it uses transparent glass lined LED lights. When the presenter writes on the illuminated glass with neon markers it results in an eye-catching display that seemingly floats mid-air. The addition of a camera, lights, and a microphone allows instructors to create media as they write and draw while keeping eye contact with their audience, making the delivery of their message both natural and engaging. This combination of spoken words, pictures and social cues makes the lightboard an effective technology tool for teaching. For further reading on the pedagogical potential of lightboards please see this 2019 article.
